Rough Justice by Lisa Scottoline

 Rough Justice is a fast-paced legal thriller built around an intriguing moral dilemma. Criminal defense lawyer Marta Richter is on the verge of winning an acquittal for wealthy businessman Elliot Steere when he admits to her that he really did commit the murder. With the jury already deliberating, Marta desperately searches for evidence that could expose her own client's guilt. Meanwhile, a severe Philadelphia snowstorm adds another layer of urgency and danger to the investigation.

The premise is easily the novel's strongest part. The conflict between a lawyer's professional obligations and her desire to see justice done creates plenty of tension, while Mary DiNunzio, Judy Carrier and Bennie Rosato bring the Rosato & Associates team into the action. The story moves quickly, with investigations, threats, and twists keeping the pressure on the characters.

Some situations stretch credibility, and at times the plot feels more like an action thriller than a realistic courtroom drama. Still, it is an entertaining read with a strong female-led cast and an unusual legal setup. Readers who enjoy courtroom mysteries and suspense novels with plenty of twists should find Rough Justice an enjoyable addition to the Rosato & Associates series.

Overall: An entertaining, quick-moving legal thriller with an excellent central dilemma, even if some of the plot developments are a little far-fetched.
