Maybe Someday is an emotional contemporary romance built around music, betrayal, and two people forming a connection at the worst possible time.
Sydney’s life falls apart when she discovers that her boyfriend has been cheating on her with her best friend. She soon becomes close to Ridge, the musician she has been listening to from the balcony opposite her apartment. Their songwriting partnership gives Sydney something positive to focus on, but the relationship becomes increasingly complicated as their feelings grow.
The musical aspect was probably my favourite part of the book. The idea of the characters writing songs together gives their relationship a more personal and creative foundation than simple physical attraction. The accompanying songs by Griffin Peterson are also an interesting addition and help make the story feel more immersive.
Colleen Hoover writes in a very readable and emotionally intense style, so the book was easy to get through. There are plenty of romantic moments, dramatic revelations, and scenes designed to make the reader feel conflicted. Sydney and Ridge have believable chemistry, and some of their quieter interactions are genuinely touching.
However, I struggled with the way the central relationship developed. The novel clearly wants the situation to feel morally complex, but at times it seemed to excuse hurtful behaviour because the characters connection was presented as unusually deep or inevitable. I understood their feelings, but I did not always sympathise with their decisions. Some of the conflict also became repetitive, with the characters repeatedly moving closer together and then pulling away for similar reasons.
The emotional drama occasionally felt excessive as well. Almost every development is treated as a major, life-changing moment, which made the story feel exhausting in places. I would also have liked some of the supporting characters and relationships to receive more depth instead of mainly existing to push Sydney and Ridge’s romance forward.
Overall, Maybe Someday has an appealing musical concept, strong romantic tension, and the addictive writing style Colleen Hoover is known for. It kept me interested, but the relationship dynamics and some of the characters choices prevented me from becoming fully invested.
A readable and emotional romance, but not one I completely connected with. 3 out of 5 stars.
